About me

Sarah Jane Nicholls - Yorkshire artist and painter

Yorkshire artist and painter

Since moving to Yorkshire from London in 2008 I have been so inspired by the Yorkshire countryside, particularly how the colours and textures of the trees change throughout the year. Painting trees and landscapes is one of my main passions, although I have recently worked on a series of paintings and commissions of bright colourful abstracts on glass which I loved.

I have been painting for most of my life. In the last 5 years, I have proudly turned my painting hobby into a career. I am self taught and have developed my style and techniques through experimentation and lots and lots of practice.

Most of my paintings are done on sheets of glass or acrylic. This method of painting requires lots of brain power and thoughtful precision as I need to paint everything in reverse — painting things in the foreground first then layering the paint from behind.

I paint from my home studio in Collingham near Wetherby, West Yorkshire where I am often accompanied by my loyal (yet sometimes crazy) Cockapoo dog, Dougie.

How I paint

Glass painting is a rewarding yet challenging process. First, everything is painted in reverse starting with what is in the foreground then layering from behind. I often have to paint the first layer two to three times to provide a solid base. This layered painting makes sure the foreground is thick enough for the next layer of paint to not show through.

In this picture for example, every branch was painted three times to make sure the branches maintained their structure before the blue sky was painted on top

My painting style

I love painting in vivid colours that create depth and emotion. More of my more recent work incorporates a ‘pointillist’ style in which I paint by layering thousands and thousands of dots on top of each other. This style helps bring my landscapes to life, especially paintings of trees or beautiful wild flower meadows.

I have also developed a painting technique where I paint onto sheets of glass or acrylic (rather than a canvas) which creates very bold colours and 3D effects through the various layers and shadows. Painting on glass adds an extra challenge to my painting process as it requires me to create the piece in reverse.

My paint palette is usually full of bright contrasting colours — the brighter the better, in my opinion!

Proud supporter of Artists Around Wetherby

For the last four years, I have been a very proud member of the Artists Around Wetherby (AAW) Open Studio events.

Each year a group of artists, all within a 6 mile radius of Wetherby open up their home studios to the public to show and sell their work.

The Artists Around Wetherby open studio weekends are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the art that is created within the local Wetherby area and gets so much support from visitors. I love seeing the dynamic range of talented creative people, who all hold such a diverse variety of skills and styles, within such a small area.

In 2024 the AAW Open Studio celebrates its 10th year and will be held on the 1st & 2nd June & 8th & 9th from 10am - 5pm so be sure to pop these dates in your diary.
